The literature of travel as a genre of writing has certain common characteristics. Travel books are reports of what a traveller has actual1y experienced and seen. The reports are largely autobiographical and are enriched with opinions and reflections. Travellers and travel books have extended knowledge, enlarged ideas, and served as index to culture. The Journey, imaginary or realistic, is used to make tel1ing points about defect of society. The traveller usually takes full advantage of the opportunities to expose vice and folly, and provide irony and satire. An analysis of the narrative mode of Lu Hsün’s fiction shows that many of his short stories bear the closest resemblance to the travel literature of his time and that of late Ch'ing dynasty. It exhibits the influence of the most basic of all travel literature conventions. Many of his representative works such as “My Old Home” and “New Year’s Sacrifice” are built upon the plan of a domestic journey. The influence of travel literature is apparent in these works, sometimes faintly, sometimes strongly. Like the burlesque travel literature, it is traditionally contrived so that it not only directs attention to the defects of human nature and human institutions, but also suggests remedies. This paper concludes that Lu Hsün’s fiction marks the culmination of a long tradition in travel 1iterature.ItaIso represents the successful transformation of travel literature conventions into the means for significant literary expressions.
