     This paper discusses theoretical issues involved incorporating graphic techniques in multimedia applications. From a dual coding perspective, the use of text with graphics allows information to be encoded in both verbal and image memory systems. This makes more connections available during retrieval. However, visual design requires careful consideration of how learners make various mental connections. The paper provides guidelines for presenting these two modes of information in multimedia instruction.
