This article, based on available Manchu and Chinese historical arc hives, presents the details of Joachim Bouvet's study of the Book of Change<< 易 經 >>during the late K'anghsi 康熙 era. The article provides further evidence for the doctrine held by Jesuits in China since Matteo Ricci, that obtaining deep understanding of Chinese classics and Chinese culture is important. The article also points out how the Jesuits' motivation was related to their conflicts with other sects' missionaries in China.
