There are striking similarities between the ways religious activities demarcate social solidarities in Fujian and certain processes that are familiar to anthropologists from Taiwan-based ethnography. Obviously, the political and economic circumstances framing emergent local and regional identities in Fujian differ significantly from those that have constituted the wider social context in Taiwan. The specification and interpretation of such differences constitutes an exciting new arena for specialists. This arena also has a potential contribution to practical dialogue in the nexus of Taiwan, Minnan, and Chinese politics. The two questions raised by this paper are:In the rapidly changing economic and political circumstances facing Taiwan and Fujian, how is religiously motivated collective action implicated in the reproduction of longstanding lines of demarcation of social solidarity ﹖ How is such collective action employed in producing new definitions of community and identity ﹖
