　　　　　目的︰檢測人格特質與壓力因應策略的相關作用，並了解這些因素對精神健康狀態的影響。 　　方法︰以分層隨機取樣方式從南臺灣某城市中選取20歲以上的家庭成員，然後邀請他們到醫院的健檢病房接受各項身心健康檢查，其中包括填寫神經質性格量表、敵意量表、臺灣人壓力因應策略量表及12項中國人健康量表。 　　結果︰共有667人完成所有量表的測試，男女比例相當，平均年齡36.7±11.8，已婚及同居者佔64.6%，70%以上的教育程度在高中以上。以12項中國人健康量表分數作為精神健康指標，本研究結果發現神經質性格對精神健康有很明顯且關鍵性的負面影響，而尋求社會支持的壓力因應策略則可以減緩高神經質性格對精神健康的作用。 　　結論︰精神的健康狀態會受到人格特質的影響，但人格特質的脆弱性可經由壓力因應策略的調整加以改善，其中尋求社會支持的策略對精神健康有正面作用。
　　　　　Objective: This study examined the interrelated effects of personality characteristics and coping strategies on mental health. Methods: A stratified random household sample was recruited from a city in south Taiwan and invited to attend a health screening program performed in a general hospital. The attenders were asked to undergo a series of standardized psychological assessments of neuroticism, hostility, coping strategies, and minor psychiatric morbidity. Results: A total of 667 subjects completed all of the psychological assessments. Percentages of male and female subjects were equal. The mean age was 36.7 ± 11.8. The majority of subjects were married and cohabiting (64.6%) and more than 70% of the subjects had an education higher than senior high school level. Neuroticism played a major role in predicting psychiatric morbidity in terms of CHQ-12 score. However, coping with adversity by support seeking, an emotion-focused engagement coping style, was shown to moderate the effect of high neuroticism on psychological well-being. Conclusion: The findings of this study are compatible with those of previous reports and have important implications to future public health delivery. That is, people's mental health might be compromised by inherent personality characteristics, but the effect of personality could be moderated by improving coping behaviours.
