Being seen as one of subversive political groups during the Ching Dynasty, the vegetarian sect in Taiwan was naturally derived from its special historical root in keeping the characteristic of “secrecy” undercover. The spatial form of vegetarian halls of its three schools in Taiwan, then, has been considered as a result of various influences in which the political suppression was the key point. Therefore, in this paper, we are probing not only into the origin of the “secrecy” of vegetarian halls and its responsive presentations, but also into the socio-cultural meanings of “secrecy”within the sacred spaces in a vegetarian hall by analyzing the representions of ritual spaces within.
