Carelessness and indulgence are always highly estimated in traditional Chinese culture. Carelessness means being away from the official career and Confucian doctrine while indulgence means self-indulgent, which is different from the word "the careless, the enterprising spirit" said by the Confucian himself in some ways. It's the same meaning that the authors in Song Dynasty were inclined to saying themselves careless and indulgent. This mood showed in careless of official life and preferable to being away from it, enjoyed themselves in scenery and countryside life, and clung to poetry, drink, love and so on. In short, they were in pursuit of freedom and aesthetic taste of life, which is away from the official career.
