He scrutinizes the trajectories of urban innovation and divides them into three distinctive types (cultural/ intellectual; technological-productive; and technological-organizational). Of three types, the third one is expected to play the most important role in the next century. Despite the major impacts the revolution of digitalization and multi-media will make on our social life, it does not seem likely, as many would argue, that the death of distance and the disappearance of city will ensue. Cities will remain the places where intensive human contacts take place. And they will still be centers of production and consumption of art, technology and entertainment. Although Hall recognizes the dark side to the otherwise rosy picture-the social polarization of urban society, he nevertheless holds firmly to the optimistic future promised by the new technology changes. He concludes the articles by telling a success story of a small British town where bureaucratic rigidity is overcome and where multi-media becomes a means of self-empowerment for the socially and economically disadvantaged people.
