13至14世紀,英國作家把動物敘事和遠東想象結合起來,在百科全書、編年史、虛構游記和騎士文學中展示出英國人的東方情結和潛在的動物幻想。遠東體現出野蠻性、怪物特質和物種差異的消解,但又是英國人艷羨的文明之地。在與歐洲大陸遠東構建模式保持傳遞性和連貫性的基礎上,這些作家通過動物敘事構建的遠東既是文化烏托邦的象征,又是文化他者的代表,成為中世紀英國人定位自身文化身份和在歐洲大陸文化圈中的地位的實踐對象。
Medieval English writers combined animal narrative and the imagination of the Far East and revealed the long-lasting English orientalist complex and their underlying zoological fantasy in the encyclopedia, chronicle, fictional travel literature and romance from the 13 th to 14 th centuries. The Far East means not only a place of savageness, monstrousness and dissolution of species differences, but also a civilized place admired by English people. Its tendency of preference ordering is transitive and consistent with the imagination of the Far East from the Continent. These writers construct the Far East as a cultural Utopia as well as a cultural Other through animal narrative, which in turn is applied as the object to define the English cultural identity and their position in European cultural circle in the Middle Ages.
