手帕是人們日常生活中的常見物品,同時也是戲劇舞臺上的眾多道具之一,它不單單能反映角色的性別、國族、階級等身份,同時也能展現出其性格特點。《奧瑟羅》以摩爾人奧瑟羅為主人公,講述了他因嫉妒殺死妻子的悲劇。本文擬以此劇中細小而又關鍵的舞臺道具手帕為切入點,通過分析奧瑟羅手帕的特點,結合同時代的性別與種族意識,指出手帕不僅與苔絲德夢娜作為妻子的品德相關,更是奧瑟羅本人異國性的象征,具有"魔法"的手帕正是劇中一切悲劇的根源。

Handkerchief is used in daily life and also a crucial property on stage. It can help us to understand not only a character’s identity of gender, nation and class, but also their personality. Shakespeare’s Othello is one of his most popular tragedies. It is a play about the jealous Moor Othello, who murdered his wife. This paper aims to analyze the characters and plots of Othello in light of the stage prop the handkerchief, explore the important but complex implications of handkerchief through features of Othello’s handkerchief, and point out the handkerchief’s association with Desdemona’s virtue as a wife as well as Othello’s exoticism. Thus the paper reveals the magic handkerchief as the root of Othello’s sad ending.
