ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was investigating the effectiveness of training parents of children with autism and mental retardation to use Pivotal Response Treatment (PRT) in home environments to facilitate the domestic skills of their children. The participants were three parent-child dyads. The children varied in age from10 to 12. A multiple probe design across subjects was used to evaluate parents’ abilities to correctly apply the PRT and also to assess the effects of the intervention on domestic skills of children. Results showed that after dealing with the children’s problems of sensory processing and motor planning, PRT could be used by parents to improve the performance of children with autism on domestic skills. In addition, there were the collateral changes in reducing the children’s disturbing behaviors and improving the children’s ability of communication.
Key word: autism, Pivotal Response Treatment, domestic skills
