本文探查與漢語複雜疑問詞相關的三個面向。首先，本文嘗試採取運符約束(operator binding)運作手段(Tsai 2012)，解釋與複雜疑問詞相關的主題結構及雙位(discrete)結構。其次，本文討論在補語詞組(CP)及指示詞組(DP)範疇內，皆可出現主題結構的情況。第三，本文嘗試分析漢語的指示詞組內部結構及名詞組的解讀。本文發現，主題結構可採取運符約束手段，透過D(限定)運符及文中所提出的A(關聯)運符的操作來說明，前者可使用於顯性主題移位，而後者可用於分析無顯性移位的雙位、非移位主題、及無空位(gapless)主題等結構。本文亦根據Hu & Pan (2009)及Reinhart (1982)，提出一組用於檢核主題狀態的主題關聯(aboutness condition)檢核條件。而「補語詞組－指示詞組」間的雙層主題結構，是D運符或A運符在此二個範疇內的作用而產生。關於指示詞組內部結構，本文延續Hsieh (2008) 及Zhang (2012)的看法，進行修改而提出 KP > DP > nP > NP 的分析，本文認為，數量(Number/Classifier, #P)單元位於Spec,nP，而修飾單元(modification, MP)位於Spec,NP。此外，本文提出，漢語名詞組的解讀，事實上可區分為五類：泛指、非具體不定指、具體不定指、非具體定指、具體定指，其中，[泛指(generic)]為一獨立分類，而[+-具體(specific)]是用來次要區別(sub-categorize)[+-定指(definite)]的特徵。各解讀在指示詞組層帶有隱性的解讀運符，而名詞組的解讀，取決於該名詞組的指示詞組結構內可承載的解讀運符，由語境(context)所選擇及檢核後產生。

This thesis investigates Mandarin Chinese Complex Wh-phrases (CCW) with three aims. First, it tries to account for the topic structure and the ‘discrete’ constructions with Chinese complex wh-phrases by adopting the operator-binding mechanism (in the sense of Tsai 2012). Second, it addresses the situations when topic structures are applied to both CP and DP domains. Third, it endeavors to analyze the DP-internal structure in Mandarin Chinese and how it influences nominal interpretations. The thesis finds that topic structures can be accounted for by the operator-binding mechanism using the D(efinite) operator and the proposed A(boutness) operator, the former applies to (overt) topicalization cases while the latter for (covert) ‘discrete, non-movement topicalization, and gapless topic’ constructions. The study formulated a set of ‘aboutness’ conditions for topic structure originated by Hu & Pan (2009) and Reinhart (1982). It is also argued that the dual-layer topic structures are formed with the interactions of D or A operators at the CP and DP domains. The thesis also proposes a KP > DP > nP > NP hierarchy for Chinese DP derived and modified from Hsieh (2008) and Zhang (2012), with an identification of the base-generation positions for number/classifier elements (the #P) and modification elements (the MP): #P at Spec,nP and MP at Spec,NP. It is proposed that nominal expressions in Chinese are realized in five types: generic, non-specific indefinite, specific indefinite, non-specific definite, and specific definite. The [generic] reading is a class of its own, and the [+-specific] features are to sub-categorize [+-definite] readings. These readings are carried by corresponding covert (interpreting) operators within DP, and the actual readings of nominal phrases are eventually determined by available operators to be chosen by the context.
