In the constantly ever-changing era of the information, communication and technology (ICT) industry, firms have to always plan and conduct appropriate strategies in response to up-to-date technology and the urgent needs from market demand. Aside from expertise and internal resources, firms must consider about how to target customers’ requirements and key component vendors’ technological skills, and then coordinate with them in the framework of a business development network so as to enhance decision making over the best strategy alternatives. This research introduces two small and medium enterprise (SME) empirical cases and explores the core factors related to the decision making process based on interviews, questionnaire responses, qualitative theoretical research, and quantitative measurement analysis in order to highlight the optimal strategies that can be recommended to firms.
Case study one: For a projects-based research and development firm, the project priority strategy is the benchmark of its corporate operation management strategy. This empirical study take variables of a firm’s market, technology, and financial assets into account and addresses the key factors of the interaction between businesses within a project development’s supply chain: clients, the examined firm, and suppliers. The findings indicate that a profit-driven project can dominate the firm’s strategic operations and management from the resource-based view and analytic hierarchy process technique perspectives.
Case study two: Integrated circuit (IC) component vendors/ suppliers with the appropriate technical know-how can profitably contribute to co-business development. This case study deploys experts’ judgments to incorporate a vendor’s capability, productivity, and reliability characteristics as the core factors for an appropriate vendor selection analysis. From the business ecosystem aspect, in order to review the importance of buyer-supplier synergistic effects and the fuzzy-AHP technique analysis results, we take a Taiwan-based IC design vendor as the first priority among the selection of alternatives.
Referring to theoretical methods and analytical approaches, senior management’s expertise with industrial experiences, and the evolvement in how business network partners implemented the empirical cases, in this dissertation we examine the increasing importance of academia/industry cooperation research.
