The focus of this article is on the process from the "hot war" to the "cold war", and the confrontation of the war reflects the "battlefield memory" of Shamei District and its influence on the history of Kinmen. The Shamei District used to bustling and busy, but today it is deserted and slow. The current problems are the aging population and the serious migration of young people. Most locals in the district believe that it is related to the lifting of the battlefield administration in Kinmen, and the number of troops stationed in the country has dropped sharply, which leads to the decline of Shamei District. However, before the confrontation between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, Shamei Street itself itself was the place where merchants gathered, and its business activities were blooming. Because of the above phenomena and the author's love of his hometown, he started to study the customs and social changes in Shamei District. The two main points of this research are the historical context and the influence of the world situation on the local society of Kinmen on the border of the Cold War. These impacts include the decline of commerce, population migration, and the decline of the street. One is how such influences have manifested in the historical memory of the residents of Shamei District, and how the collective memory of the community can be condensed through past historical events, as well as the process of public participation.
When the historical development of Kinmen was affected by changes in the situation of the times, social changes in Shamei District were affected at various levels. After the gradual abolition of the garrison, the sharp decline in consumption power caused the depression in Shamei District and street. The young and middle-aged population in Shamei District moved to other places in order to find jobs. The street was gradually declining and the population was dying. Local people began to realize that the problem was serious, local identity and community awareness rose, and some people looked forward to the transformation of the street. Local people have begun to think about the local characteristics of Kinmen and Shamei, which also symbolizes the rise of local cultural awareness and local creation. Some voices hope that the street will develop towards the cultural and creative industry; of course, there are also voices that oppose the development of the district or shopping mall construction, such as the demolition and use of "Shamei Theater”.
In fact, whether it is the transformation of the street and district or the opposition, both of them reflect the formation and cohesion of the community consciousness in Shamei Community. To a certain extent, this kind of community consciousness also shows the local identity of the Shamei people. Some people with lofty ideals return to their hometowns to develop the place, and gradually strengthen the cohesion of local identity. This research will expand the discussion of the historical and humanistic changes of Shamei through the level of historical memory, supplemented by the geographical space thinking as the latitude and longitude, and extend the concept of "spatial memory" to discuss the social changes of the humanities of the Shamei settlements, due to the Shamei settlement type has its particularity and historical context. Therefore, the discussion of spatial memory can help clarify many issues of human-land relationship, settlement development and changes, and community awareness and identity in Shamei District.
