本論文研究亞瑟柯南道爾福爾摩斯系列中的空間轉化。本論文將道爾的作品置入推理小說傳統格式的框架中,並指出小說中的空間轉化提供了顛覆推理小說傳統中理性和非理性界線,以及質疑小說內建帝國/殖民主義認同的可能。本論文探討的主要文本為三本中篇小說,分別是《血字研究》(1887)、《四簽名》(1890) 和《巴斯克維爾的獵犬》(1902),與收錄於兩本短篇故事集:《夏洛克福爾摩斯的冒險》(1892) 與《夏洛克福爾摩斯的回憶錄》(1894) 中的數篇短篇故事。空間與其再現是本論文探討的重要一環,特別是地圖、城市空間和風景的空間塑造與其論述中產生歧異地景表述的可能;有些再造可做為殖民制序的再現,有些再造則能夠對殖民制序與理性提出質疑。本論文討論道爾作品中的空間描繪與偵探文類的交匯點,並提出小說中的空間書寫顛覆推理小說中意識型態、科學理性和文類傳統的可能。
Abstract
This dissertation examines the transformation of spaces in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmesian canon. By situating the texts within generic tradition of detective fiction, this dissertation points out that the representation of landscapes provides subverting potential to erode the genre’s rigid borders between reason and non-reason and to question the genre’s innate ideological alignment to imperial order. This dissertation focuses on 3 novellas: A Study in Scarlet(1887), The Sign of Four (1890) and The Hound of the Baskervilles (1902) and some selected short stories, especially that included in The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1892) and The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1894). Spaces and their representations: mapped territories, cityscapes and landscapes are explored to show spatial formation is a discursive act potentialized with divergent geographic articulations—some affirming hegemonic,colonial order and reason, while some questioning them. This dissertation analyses the intersection between Doyle’s depictions of landscapes and the formulaic genre Doyle writes in and considers the possibility of landscape depictions’ subverting potential to the genre’s rigidity concerning colonial ideologies, scientific reason and the genre conventions.
