Rapid changes in today’s work environment entail that workers need to maintain their best physical and mental states to meet the requirements and challenges at work. As work stress may ultimately have a negative impact on individuals, workers may adopt leisure coping strategies to gain positive mental energy. Pet-keeping enables pet owners to gain positive emotions through interacting with pets, thereby reducing the impact of work stress. This study relates the conservation of resources theory and attachment theory to explore the moderating role of pet attachment on the relationship between the pet owners’ work stress and life satisfaction. A total of 210 questionnaires were received from visitors at a pet expo and who were experienced in raising pets. Structural equation modeling and bootstrapping were used to test for mediation and moderation effects. The results show that emotional exhaustion was a mediator in the relationship between work stress and life satisfaction, the mediation effects of emotional exhaustion are moderated by pet attachment. This study also proposes relevant practical implications and further researches suggestions.
