　　　　　本文利用日本人於1921至1931之間在臺灣所做的成人平均身高調查，推估他們孩童時期的營養淨值（net nutrition）。如此，可以比較日治前後的經濟表現。本研究顯示出清治末年和日治初年的情況不同。不管男女，清治末年成年人的身高不高，但是日治初年的身高卻很快開始增加。根據該調查資料估計，生於1908到1910年間的男人比生於1887年到1889年間的男人高2.62公分，女人更高了2.48公分。日治初期的一些觀察家相信臺灣當時的經濟將很快地發展起來，本文的研究結果亦支持這個論點。

　　　　　This paper uses data on average adult Taiwanese heights collected by the Japanese government over the period 1921-1931 to estimate changes in net nutrition which occurred during these adults' childhood years. This paper shows that conditions in the late CH'ing and early Japanese periods differed. There was no growth in final male or female adult heights for those born in the late Ch'ing period, but there was an increase in these heights for those born in the Japanese period. This paper estimates that the average male born between 1908 and 1910 grew to be 2.62 centimeters taller than the average male born in the period 1887-1889. For women, the difference was 2.48 centimeters. The results of this paper support the belief of contemporary foreign observers who judged that the Taiwanese economy immediately improved after the Japanese takeover.
