In recent years, libraries have decided to move toward electronic libraries. Electronic collection, operation, and service are the three aspects of an electronic library. The current trend in electronic service is to provide users with personalized services and group them into communities for sharing common interests and knowledge. In order to foster the development of a personalized and group information system in an electronic library format, this article studies how to establish such a system using library-automation systems. This article aims at the following: 1. Proposing a framework for a personalized and group information environment based on library-automation systems; 2. Studying how to dynamically track user interests and apply the research result to a personalized electronic service; 3. Studying the data mining technique and applying it to on electronic service that enables the formation of user communities; and 4. Implementing a prototype system, called Personalized Information Environment at NCTU (PIE@NCTU).
