在全球化盛行的今日，區域主義也日漸的興起。1980年後期所形成新一波區域主義浪潮明顯不同於之前的區域主義，主要特點是具有板塊特性、關注的內容和實現的目標不斷增強，以及超越傳統國際政治南北關係界線的分野，出現了已開發國家與開發中國家共同建構區域主義的新方式。此外，新區域主義也成為全球化與國家之間溝通的橋樑。最近，東亞的區域合作引起多數人的關注，尤其是「東協+3」合作架構之建立，可說是新區域主義在東亞的最佳實踐。在「東協+3」合作架構之下，不論是「東協+3」多邊型態，或者「東協+1」雙邊型態，或是非官方的「第二軌道」都發揮具體的合作成效，對於期待未來能夠形成「東亞共同體」打了ㄧ劑強心針。但是，東亞的新區主義發展也面臨必須克服「東亞共同體」概念分歧、運作分歧，以及美、日、中共等大國之間潛在衝突的挑戰。
