本文為台灣建設史研究的一環，著重的是日本殖民初期台灣民間建設業者之活動，情形，意即針對實質進行建設之民間主體的部份，所做的相關研究。與本文相關的先前研究有〈日本殖民初期官方建設事業之特質－台灣建設史之土木建設主體研究〉（2006），之後預計有〈官民合作之土地建物開發公司的產生一台灣建設史之都市經營主體研究〉。透過這三篇研究，可以對於台灣在20 世紀初期，由官方到民間之執行建設主體的全貌與特質，有體系性的理解。 　　本研究之第一部份主要是運用統計分析的手法，以具有較詳盡基礎史料之台北市街為例，呈現了百餘年前民間社會之建設業者的相關狀況。就統計現象的背後因素進行推敲，並提出此時期之結構對於後續台灣民間建設業發展之影響。第二部份則以主要鐵道建設為例，解析出殖民初期政府所發展出之民間先行的公共建設導入手法。並就如交通、用電等建設事業之公益性，談論民營公益事業於台灣開展的嘗試情形。

　　This paper is one part of studying in Taiwan construction history. The focal point was the activities of construction traders on Taiwan during the Early of Japanese colonial period, especially concerned about the private principal of doing construction. The research correlated with this paper includes "The Specialty of Official Construction Enterprises on Taiwan during the Early of Japanese colonial period.- The Principal of Civil Construction in Taiwan Construction History." and "Advent of the Land & Building Company, Cooperates between the Officials and Businessmen.- Study on the Urban Management Principal in Taiwan Construction History." Pass these three researches, we can understand complete that the official and private enterprises of Taiwan's construction in the early days of twenty century. 　　The first part of this paper is to use statistical analysis mainly, the street of Taipei city as the example, to present the state of the private construction traders before more than one hundred years. And carry on reasoning, infer with the statistics, put forward the influence on the development of private construction traders. 　　The second part is built for the example with the railway construction mainly; explain public construction development methods of private preceding on Taiwan during the Japanese Colonial Period. And then on such construction causes as the traffic, electricity, etc., come to talk about the development situation in Taiwan of public benefit of private enterprises.
