Taipei MRT provides the Taipei metropolitan area with convenient and comfortable transportation. However, with MRT lines being constructed beneath or close to business and residential buildings, occupants of those buildings always complain and protest against vibration and noise created by passing trains. To reduce the impact on neighboring buildings and minimize residents' complaints, the floating slab track (FST) system was created. In fact, the FST system has already been used in overseas MRT projects to solve vibration and noise problems. The FST system was applied to Taipei MRT Xinzhuang and Luzhou lines for the first time in a domestic construction project and is to be put in place on the Xinyi and Songshan lines as well. The function of attenuating vibration and noise through the use of FST is based on the massspring principle; the mass is provided by the trains, rails and slabs. The main facility to resist vibration is the floating slab track's bearing system which is made of long-life materials. Typically, the materials are rubber, rubber compound, coil spring bearing, fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP), etc. Nowadays the majority of manufacturers world-wide use rubber bearings and coil spring bearings. This paper gives a short analysis and evaluation of the FST system using natural rubber bearings and a mini-slab implemented by the Xinzhuang and Luzhou lines' trackwork contractor, and the FSTs with coil spring bearings proposed by the contractor that has been awarded the trackwork contract for the Songshan line.
