This research is a preliminary analysis on the international conditions for the developments of design galleries and the design works' status in the international market. 8 case studies are used on analyzing design galleries both on international and domestic cases in order to propose a categorization study of contemporary design galleries. Literature review is used to study the aspects of the value chain of the gallery industry, art collections to design collections, international art exhibitions to design exhibitions, and the artistic inclination in designs as a base to understand the current phenomenon in contemporary design art market. Case study parts are focus on the operation strategies opted by each gallery, their interactions with the creative talents, exhibitions and sales tactics. There are two types of design galleries : ”pro-motional type” and ”commercial type”. And under the commercial type, there are ”brand-oriented” design gallery and ”art-oriented” design gallery. In conclusion, some observations on Taiwan design gallery's opportunities, and some suggestions are made for further extended research possibilities.
