Chen Fengyuan (1893-1982) is the most respected person among the Taiwanese who directly witnessed and recorded the state of affairs of the Republican China.Born in Taiwan in the 19th year of Guangxu, Chen led his legendary life under Japanese rule, which began when he was two years old. During Japanese rule in Taiwan, Chen became outstanding elite in the aspects of Taiwan national movement and finance because of his extraordinary learning ability and keen insight. He went to mainland Chinese three times, using his new thinking to observe the progress and difficulties of the republican China in depth. Chen's observations were written in ”Anthology of Xi Shan Yan Yu Lou poems”, ”Sketch of new China”, and ”Yu Chuang Di Mo”. Furthermore, some articles were published in ”The Taiwan Minpao” and ”The Taiwan Shin Minpao”.This paper will discuss what Chen Fengyuan heard and saw in his visit of Southern China, North China, and Northeast of China during 1934 to 1938. The main contents are from ”Sketch of new China” and Mr. Chen’s supplementary views to this book in the recorded interview for the biography of Chen that I was commissioned to write. This paper tries to present Chen's first-hand materials to avoid the writer’s personal inference.
