The visual form of the men-lou in the Gu-Lan-Yu housing is the most characteristic elevation feature and architecture semiotics to be seen before one goes indoors. This paper into the visual form and elevation of housing in the Gu-Lan-Yu, mainly focuses on the exploration of the men-lou topic and by analyzing documents and maps, puts forth the significance and visual form features of the men-lou of housing. The concrete research results are: (1) A men-lou is a specific material to delimitate indoor and outdoor spaces and also a symbol for the status of the dwellers, and the main forms of the men-lou are single-story, with few being two-story. A two-story one is more elaborate than a single-story one; (2) The facing of a men-lou is not always in accordance with that of the entrance of the building, mainly because of the considerations of terrain and feng-shui; (3) A men-lou can be divided into an upper layer, a middle layer and a lower layer. The upper layer is usually furnished with a gable or arch with baluster columns and patterns. A family name and construction date are also inscribed in the decoration. The middle layer serves as a foil to the upper layer by using columns and patterns. The lower layer is furnished mainly with tread boards and foundation supports. The decoration and visual form is semiotics of shows the local Chinese residents’ space concept of integrating Chinese and Western features.
