Recognized as an important British playwright, Caryl Churchill (1938-) shows her concern for working-class women in Fen (1983). This paper presents an analysis of Caryl Churchill’s feminist critique of work in her play Fen and intends to explore feminist consciousness among working-class women. In order to reconsider the definition of workplace, the first section of this paper begins with a discussion on separate spheres, and it takes Fen women as an example to argue that working-class women transgress the ideology of separate spheres, working in both the public and private spheres. The second section centers on the sense of alienation these women experience as a consequence of tedious daily work in the Fens and at home. Due to gender differences, working-class women’s sense of alienation is harsher and different from that of men. The final section discusses the possibility that Fen women are aware of the exercise of patriarchal and capitalist ideologies and considers a belief in the potential for transformation in female subjects.
