Before the 1970's, Feng Yu-lan had always been considered a Confucian proponent. Thus, his active role in anti-Confucian campaign stunned the entire intellectual world. In this study, the author tries to demonstrate that Feng never really embraced Confucian teachings in his early writings, such as chung-kuo che-hsueh shih and Hsin-li-hsueh.Thus, Feng's deeds in 1973-4 did not represent a major break with his earier beliefs but were in fact consistent with them.
