Although the Taiwan factor does not always determine Chinese external relations, it is none the less a constraint that all foreign policy leaders in China must face constantly. Providing a historical perspective on the change and continuity in China's Taiwan policy, this paper examines the Chinese way of managing the Taiwan factor and accordingly, infers the Chinese style of handling foreign policy issues involving principles in general.
