The global informationsuperhighway is making it possiblefor institutions
like libraries andacademic institutions, as well aslaypersons, to have access to a
myriad of educational and informatonalmaterials that was never beforepossible. New
channels for communications are now open and go beyond any national or
geographicboundaries. Connectivity among usersand information resurces provide
forspeed in transmitting informationworldwide. Wide area networks, suchas the
INTERNET, have ushered inthe information revolution whichwill impact paradigms
in education,information and entertainment. Newterms are now being coined to
represent the combination of educationand enterainment "edutainment"and
information and entertainment" infotainment. "
The global information superhighway will create newer opportunities for the library
and educationprofessions. It will also pose somechallenges which will requirechanges
or modifications in roles,attitudes, policies, and approaches.
