In recent years, more and more digital library and digital collection projects are in progress around the world with the goal of developing the global digital col1ection accessible via Internet. Basically, the major impetus of digital library comes from digital collection. At present, digitization is one of the important methods of building digital collection. This article will focus on twelve significant projects initiated in different countries, including the United States, Republic of China, Japan, Germany as well as Canada. In these projects a wide range of materials have been digitized, such as rare documents, whole books, periodical articles, sound recordings, maps, etc. Digitize in this paper refers to conversion to digital format through imaging, OCR, re-keying, or audio/video data capture. What described for each project covers project initiation, participating institutions, scope of project, digitized output, as well as project goal. Moreover, the future development of global digital collection is also addressed, based on the invaluable experience involved in these ongoing projects, including the innumerable experiments of digitization activities.
