In the rising of network society, the growth of digital documents seems
accelerate the coming of "paperless society." Library is affected by these phenomenon.
As an institution, a building, and a public space, how does the public perceive the
transformation of the library? From Shera's social epistemological point of view,
the author suggests that, historically and anthropologically, sociological
imagination is inseparable when contemplating issues of the virtualized library.
Studies in the character of library space should lie in the relations of space and
society; namely, the studies of library space is the studying of the relationship
between the library and the society. Methodologically, it is essential to discuss
the social construction and the social facts of why the library exists. Struggles
of cultural capital in the process of the rise of library are investigated from the
aspects of library history and the theory of practices by Bourdieu.
