There is no doubt about the twentieth century being an era that public librarieshave flourished and developed successfully to serve all users. Nevertheless theflourishing development of information technology into the coming new era of the21th century caught people's mind for it might possibly terminate public librariesservices and become a substitute for librarianship. Despite of the misconception thatthe demise of public libraries is inevitable, the author argues for the essentialimprovements that public libraries may provide for the children of the Republic ofChina in the near future to assure the complex responsibilities of public libraries andits inherent role to keep young users well oriented in the information age.
