Study on Wang Jingzhi's Calligraphy Art
Abstract
Wang Jingzhi is a well-known contemporary calligraphy master. His calligraphy works have a unique and distinctive style and a strong literary heritage. In addition to his own profound Chinese studies and calligraphy attainments, he has also made great efforts to promote calligraphy education. The source of his calligraphy art, in the early days, was derived from Wang Xizhi and Xianzhi as the roots, and the Tang and Song lines were taken as the branches and leaves; he was also benefited from the instruction by modern masters Qi Gong and Shen Yinmo, and later also included Mi Fu. Even so, his skills and thoughts are unique and have his own appearance. The calligraphy style Wang Jingzhi was good at included regular, running hand and cursive script, especially the cursive script which he was devoted to during his later years. People are naturally fascinated by his elegant calligraphy art. What he inherited is the two Wangs’ lineage, which has a lofty position in the contemporary calligraphy world. For this reason, the gene bloodline and the inheritance line of Wang Jingzhi's calligraphy art are worthy of in-depth discussion. This is the subject of this study.
The author of this thesis takes ``Study on Wang Jingzhi's Calligraphy Art'' as the topic, and has discussed and analyzed research motives, scope, and documents. The author will also discuss the foundation stage of his calligraphy as well as the period of following Qi Gong and Shen Yinmo, and then trace back to the origin of the two Wangs’ period. Regarding each type of his calligraphy works, the author will analyze the examples of his style and characteristics in different stages, and also analyze those aspects of his painting poems. Following this, the author will discuss the influence and transfer of Wang Jingzhi's calligraphy achievements, and briefly introduce some of his students who have achieved accomplishments in this field. By doing so, the outline of his inheritance will be clearly seen.
The author hopes that through this study, Wang Jingzhi's calligraphy viewpoints and calligraphy heritage will be explained, which will have a profound impact on the development and transfer of the contemporary Taiwanese ”Tiepai” style of calligraphy, and will have a profound enlightening function for the following calligraphy scholars. And, hopefully in the future, Wang Jingzhi's “Tiepai”calligraphy art will play an important role in carrying forward the calligraphy art and brightening the future in calligraphy under the inheritance of his students.
