There has been a significant surge of interest in pro-environmental behavior within the recreation research field in recent years. This study endeavors to explore the impact of recreational activities on the environment, with few studies focusing on the concept of crafting as applied to outdoor recreation. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the relationship between recreation crafting and pro-environmental behavior, while also examining the potential mediating effects of engagement and place attachment. A total of 535 valid questionnaires were collected from hikers traversing the Ta Shan Trail in Alishan, Chiayi.
The research findings indicate that recreational crafting does not have a significant direct relationship with pro-environmental behavior. However, recreational crafting has a positive relationship with engagement and place attachment. Moreover, both engagement and place attachment have positive relationships with pro-environmental behavior. In the context of multiple mediation analysis, the results show that both engagement and place attachment play a full mediating role between recreational crafting and pro-environmental behavior, with the mediating effect of engagement being significantly higher than that of place attachment. This study reveals that individuals' attitudes towards recreational activities need to be channeled through engagement and place attachment to overflow into the activity area, thus reflecting their concern for and protection of the environment. Finally, based on the research findings, this study presents several theoretical and managerial implications, as well as suggestions for future research directions.
