To upgrade Taiwanese students' English language proficiency skills in coping with the global trend, the Taiwanese Government has been planning to recruit more than 1000 native English speakers with B.A. degree as an auxiliary role to work together with Taiwanese English teachers in English classes from primary through secondary school in the next couple of years. The aim of this paper is to explore if Taiwanese English teachers and native English speakers can successfully cooperate with each other in the same classroom. A questionnaire of local English teachers' attitudes towards team teaching was conducted to pinpoint if it would be acceptable for Taiwanese English teachers to work together with native English speakers in the same classroom. The results indicate that this scheme could enhance students' language abilities through collaborative teaching but some of the local teachers felt if might have an effect on their future careers. This study suggests that it is crucial that their individual roles in the same classroom be clearly specified. It is also advisable that their salary system and mutual roles be equal. Team teaching then can be a professional support and training for teachers in teamwork.
