The first farmers' association in Taiwan was established in Taipei since 1900. Even though, institutional name, business, role, status and structure of the organization had different adjustments cause by the external and internal socio-economic environment changes, but the aim and purposes of this organization are still unchanged to carry out a number of functions, such us the promotion of farmers' interest in their own welfare, improvement of their knowledge and skill, increase of their farm production and income, betterment of their living conditions and development of the rural economy. In the past century, farmers' association had made significant contribution to agricultural and rural development; they played the vital role to give farm people new knowledge and skills, provided agricultural inputs, marketing, credit and welfare services for farmers. Therefore, the farmers' association is not only a multi-purpose organization to serve its member in practically all aspect of economic, educational and social for farmers, but also a partnership with government to implement agricultural and rural development policies. Farmers association have made remarkable contribution to agricultural and rural development in Taiwan, it also assessed the accumulated experience of Taiwan with reference to other counties. At present the farmers' association confronts great pressure and problems caused by the great changes in the socio-economic environment conditions. In order to provide more and efficient services and to accelerate agricultural and rural development, farmers' association should have proper adjustment to improve the structure, function and role of farmers' association in the future.
