英國社會歷史學家羅伊．波特以醫學史、身體史、精神醫學史、十八世紀英國社會史、啟蒙研究著名。本文由波特所著《瘋狂簡史》著手，從瘋狂的世俗化、瘋狂與理性、瘋狂的聲音、現代精神醫學的發展等角度切入，討論其瘋狂史研究的特色。此外，本文也略述波特與法國思想家傅柯兩人精神醫學史書寫方式的差異。
Roy Porter was known, among other things, as a historian of medicine, the body, sexuality, psychiatry, the eighteenth-century England, and the Enlightenment. Taking Porter's Madness: A Brief History as the starting point, the article reviews his historiography of madness. Some comparative notes are also provided between Porter and Foucault with reference to their views on madness at the age of reason and the voice of the mad.
