The development of artist-in-residence schemes and artist village in Europe and America started during the 1950s and 1960s, while they were gradually practiced in Asian countries. Through the influence of contemporary art trend, artists' works intend to go into place of everyday life and often present local culture, current issues. The open and fluid characteristics of artist-in-residence schemes and artist villages create an experimental and innovative direction for the recent development of contemporary art. In the process and result of artist-in-residence schemes, artists often engage with specific culture and place and it is also in this open process that artists deeply reflect on their own cultural identity. Therefore this paper intends to discuss about the process of current practice of artist-in-residence schemes that are related to issues of community art, site-specific art and cultural exchange.
