I. J. Roberts was an American Baptist missionary in China in 19th century. He was best known for his role as Hung Hsiu-chuan's religious teacher and his special relationship with the Taiping rebellion. Roberts instructed Hung in studying Christianity in 1847, and he had a good impression on Hung at that time. He also thought the visions that Hung mentioned were similar to angel's calling. Although Hung studied the gospel only for about two months, it had influenced the Taiping religion's comprehension and ceremony. This article will trace back to American Baptist missionary I. J Roberts' works in China during the early period, and analyzed his impression on the period of Hung Hsiu-chuan's research for gospel in Canton (Kuang-chou). Furthermore, Roberts' religious influence upon Hung Hsiu-chuan will be fully discussed.
