護理人力的調配、運用，在一切講求效率、效益的今日，已成為護理行政者在管 理時特別需要考慮的問題。病房是醫院的最基本、也最重要的單位，護理長是醫院中的最基 層行政主管，負責病室行政管理。病人照顧及臨床護理人員訓練等責任。工作中，護理長常 感時間運用不足，以致無法完成或延誤工作。為瞭解病室護理長每日上班工作時間之分配， 及評估護理長每日在非專業事務上之時數花費，故做此調查。調查結果發現，護理長每日工 作時數分配為：1. 病人護理相關方面：約佔 44.73 ％，平均每日約 3.56 小時。 2. 護理 行政業務方面： 約佔 33.86 ％， 平均每日約 2.70 小時。 3. 病室環境管理方面： 約佔 6.96 ％，平均每日約 0.55 小時。 4. 教育與專業查證方面：約佔 5.73 ％， 平均每日約 0.46 小時。5. 私人時間方面：約佔 5.69 ％，平均每日約佔 0.45 小時。另外，在非專業 性之工作所花費之時數方面，約佔總時數之 36.86 ％。
