Data for the present study was collected from every nursing department in Taiwan, the National Health Department, from various Taipei City, Kaohsiung City, and Tawian Province Nurse's Association, as well as from nursing associations worldwide. The study explores the current state of education, certification and practice for male nurses in Taiwan. A comparison of male nursing in Taiwan to that of other countries has been included as well. The data in this study has been systematically organized and is presented in percentiles. Results of the study show that 13 nursing departments in Taiwan accept male candidates, and that from September, 1985 to November, 1997, 1319 male candidates were accepted, 596 were graduated, and 139 were registered with professional nursing organizations. Of the 139 registered male nurses, 49.6% now work Taipei and 94.2% work in hospitals. These 139 male nurses make up only 0.2% of the total number of registered nurses on Taiwan. Compared with data obtained for this study from the 23 other nations researched, Taiwan's percentage of male registered nurses remains the lowest.
