     儘管每年有數以百萬計的遊客造訪英國的公立博物館,然與過去十年間急遽增加的博物館數目相比,觀眾人數實際上並沒有增長。種種研究顯示:博物館的觀眾組成不外乎中產階級和受過高等教育者兩類。這顯然使博物館宣稱其「為全民所有」的使命淪為口號。故為落實博物館做為教育機構的社會責任,以及因應目前的財政窘境,博物館勢必要開發「新」的觀眾,亦即那些從未參觀過博物館的「非觀眾」。然非觀眾的組成和特性為何?他們對博物館有何要求?博物館又該如何結合本身的使命與行銷,從建築物、促銷、展示和價格四個面向著手,吸引「非觀眾」的造訪?本文乃從探討實例著手,佐以研究資料說明,並期許博物館能勇於接受挑戰,藉行銷之助達成使命,走出更寬廣的路。
