邁入資訊社會時代之今日，個人電腦、網路及多媒體已廣被人們使用， 成為每個人生活與工作上不可或缺的重要工具；國內外圖書館亦已完成自動化作 業，利用網路與電腦提供讀者各項線上資訊檢索服務。現代人每天經由電腦與網 路設備所接收與處理之資訊更常以上億萬個字元來計算，故快速而有效掌握資 訊，成為當前資訊社會的特色。現今資訊科學與技術的進步實非一蹴可及，其影 響之源可追溯自西元1945年Vannevar Bush(1890-1974)所發表之文章"思維之 際"(As We May Think)及其Memex之設計理念，成為影響現代資訊科學與技術發 展之關鍵。因此撰文介紹這位資訊巨人Vannevar Bush的生平、著作與記事，以 及其對資訊社會之重要貢獻與影響。

　　　　　Vannevar Bush (1890-1974), The Information Giant, during his lifetime, had made many great and influential contributions in science and engineering, in proposing the establishment of the National Science Foundation (NSF), and in re-shaping the institutions of research and development in America and the World. Yet it is in information science and technology that Bush has become a mythic hero. He was also hailed as "the father of information science", "the father of modern computer", and "the grandfather of hypertext", the beginning of which is often recognized to be 1945 when Bush's seminal paper "As We May Think", with its conceptual design of a desktop personal information machine called the "Memex", was published in Atlantic Monthly. This classical paper "As We May Think" and the "Memex", along with Bush's "Rapid Selectors" and "Comparators" machines, have had a highly inspirational and significantly impact on the important developments of modern information science and technology and the emergence of the Information age. Thus, it is the purpose of this paper to introduce this outstanding information scientist, his biographical data, major publications, important contributions and lifetime events.
