In the summer of 1896,Sun Yat-sen organized a center of Hing Chung Woey in San Francisco and initiated an "education movement"by "peaceful propaganda". Hing Chung Woey’s propaganda became a kind of mediated contentious performance. In the context of yellow journalism,Hing Chung Woey openly appealed for a constitutional government, enlisted Chinese people to join the party,"threatened"Li Hung Chang to the extent that it became a "troublemaker "for Li. The diplomatic envoys of Qing Dynasty managed the public crisis by "dispelling rumors "in foreign countries, and intimidation and arrest in China. This struggle of public opinion was a hidden cause for Sun Yat-sen’s kidnap in London. From this accident we can catch a glimpse of late-Qing government’s crisis communication pattern and the trend of overseas Chinese public opinion on the patriotic movement. Thus,by re-evaluating Sun Yat-sen and Hing Chung Woey’s contentious movement in America from the viewpoint of a broader media field, this paper helps us understand and comprehend Sun Yat-sen’s early revolution propaganda as well as overseas Chinese’s nationalistic awareness and practice.
