Love and matrimony are always everlasting components in the world of literature. The classic Chinese novel The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is no exception. Undoubtedly, it is a novel concerning warfare and political struggles in the late Han dynasty. The author Luo Guanzhong has spent tremendous effort in order to show the readers the open clashes and secret 'feuds between different political groups. It is truly apiece of literary work that embodies the ideal of heroism. However, the description oflove and matrimony is not neglected. This paper aims at reviewing and analyzing thevarious scenes of love and matrimony in the book. The research shows that Luo Guanzhong deliberately interweaves all the events, firstly for characterization purposes to portray some well developed characters; secondly to make it part of the story line to ensure the smooth running of the novel; and lastly to bring out the theme of loyalty, chastity and selfless friendship. Therefore we are justified in saying that The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is the first novel to combine the elements of both blood and tears in the same piece of work, thus raising it to a higher level of artistry.
