Generally when dealing with the establishment of Xin Qiji's song lyric as the exemplary model in the Chinese literary tradition, most studies focused either on the artistic nature of his work or on Xin Qiji's career and personality. Although the artistic nature of his work did have its importance, the author's career and personality should be seen as an even important factor in the establishment of this exemplary status. Moreover, the dissemination of Xin Qiji's work in the later periods had also played a major role. Due to the lack of statistic evidences, it is always difficult to do any empirical research into the act and its process of the circulation of an author's literary works. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to trace the imprints and their circulation of Xin Qiji's work only before the Qing dynasty, and then to construct the establishment of Xin Qiji's work as poetic exemplary out of these materials. The topics of this research article include: 1) the historical aspect of the dissemination of Xin Qiji's work; 2) the circulation and its networks of Xin Qiji's work; 3) the strategy of the dissemination; and 4) the effect of the circulation and dissemination of Xin Qiji's work and the formation of its exemplary position. Through this study, I would like to propose a new and yet feasible approach to Xin Qiji's song lyric.
