Based on the author’s previous works of analyzing the depth structure of Confucianism, this article argues that the Confucian ethics for ordinary people were designed to arrange the hierarchical relationships within intimate society. The distinction between lifeworld and system was utilized to emphasize an important implication of modernization in Oriental society, that is, an individual has more and more opportunity to interact with people of instrumental relationships in various social systems where professional ethics are urgently in need for their smooth operation. The contradiction between Confucian ethics and professional ethics in modern society was discussed, its possible resolution by confrontational dialogue and critical communication between social systems was provided in terms of Habermas’, communicative action theory.
