This study is based on "Tales of Good and Bad Grandfathers" from Su-Ao, I-Lan, which were categorized by Mr. Ding. Nai-Tong as parts of 503E "Dog Cultivating Rice Field". In his An Index of Types of Chinese Folktales, Mr. Ding assembled these tales together with other same types of stores. The aim of this study is to search for the place where these types of tales spread, thereby confirming that they were mostly popular in our country's rice culture region. Further, the study will investigate the association between dogs and rice culture; through deciphering Shang Dynasty's oracle inscriptions on animal bones, this study will also analyze the reason why a dog becomes the vehicle for rewarding gook and punishing evil. As these tales spread from Mainland China to Japan nearby, this study will close with an exploration of Japanese version of the same type. Looking from the perspective of society, culture, and ethnicity, it proves the undeniable influences Chinese origin has had on its Japanese counterpart.
