基於不同的教育背景,學生會有不同的字彙知識、先備知識和閱讀理解力。本研究旨在探索高中職學生的字彙量、內文知識及其閱讀理解力。總共721位高中職三年級學生參與本研究,其中含高中生347人及高職生374人。每位參與本研究之學生都被給予相同時間以完成字彙測驗、閱讀英文短文、做回憶寫作和填寫文章內容知識與興趣問卷。研究結果顯示高中學生懂得識及文章內容知識以理解文章,但他們對字彙知識的依賴程度較對文章內容知識依賴程度高出很多。高中生的平均字彙量、內文知識及其閱讀理解力均大於高職生。高中職學生的英文學術字彙量都很低,若要理解英文學術文章會有困難。本研究建議高中職教師應幫助其學生盡速增加英文常用字彙量以跨越字彙門檻(3,000常用字),以增進其閱讀一般英文文章之理解力。

This study aims to investigate the varying vocabulary sizes, content knowledge and reading comprehension between senior high and vocational high school students. The subjects were 721 high school students, including 347 12th graders from five different senior high schools and 374 12th graders from here different vocational high schools. Each subject was given the same time period to complete the Vocabulary Level Test, reading a passage in English, a recall protocol in Chinese, and the Inventory of Content Knowledge and Interest Questionnaire. The results show that senior high school students who know 1,969 word families have a larger vocabulary size than do vocational high school students, who know only 426 word families. Both senior high and vocational high school students depend on vocabulary knowledge and content knowledge to comprehend text material printed in English, but they depend more on significantly better vocabulary knowledge, content knowledge, and reading comprehension than did vocational high school students. The total of both senior and vocational high school students’ knowledge of general academic words is also too small for them to effectively obtain meaningful information from academic textbooks or materials printed in English. As a sequence, the researcher suggests that senior and vocational high school teachers should help their students to reach their threshold of vocabulary (3,000 high-frequency words) as soon as possible in order to better comprehend general texts printed in English.
