大一英文課程乃是延續學生國中、高中六年之學習經驗,故其應該提供給大一新生一個新的學習方向與願景。此新的學習導向可為大一英文課程衍生出新的任務與願景,任務之一就是要找出學習者過去的問題並發展出正確的學習心態,從問卷調查及面談中得知考試導向的英文教學使學生普遍地感受到在學習的過程中缺乏回應與互動,同時學生覺得他們的需求及期許也因此而被忽略了,這也導致了他們對在大學階段繼續修習英文的冷漠。實質上,在知識經濟時代裡大一英文應該是學生未來生涯發展的跳板,而英文教師更應責無旁貸地找出學生學習的問題與困境。 學生們應從大一英文課程中瞭解到語言及文化的重要性,在全球化的潮流及對國際社會認知的趨勢下英文儼然已成為今日世界的共同語言,為了要成功地擢升與競爭,英文已是今日社會最重要的工具,故傳統考試導向的教學應該提昇為務實的教學導向,並讓學生從新的願景中瞭解英文是跨領域學習必備的一門學科,而文化與語言是密不可分的,藉由對文化的探索,可以提昇語言的學習。 就小處而言,本文將探究學生學習英文的困境並發展出有效的補救教學法,就整體而言,本文將賦予大一英文課程新的任務、探索新的方法、並為學習者建立新的願景:為自己的未來預做準備,而非為了通過任何考試。

As an extension of the students' six-year learning experience in English in junior and senior high school, the Freshman English must be able to provide them with a new perspective in their learning orientation. This new learning orientation should be a derivative of a new mssion and vision of the Freshman English Curriculum. One of the missions is to find out the problems and frustrations experienced by the learners in the past and to develop a corretive mechanism. Results from surveys and interviews revealed the common problem of a severe lack of feedbacks from the students in the learning process. In their words, the English teachers had always taught the class based on exam-orientation, and paid little attention to the students' needs and expectations. In a very specific way, this might have contributed to their apathetic resentment in their continuous learning of English in college. In essence, in a new era of knowledge-based economy, Freshman English should be viewed as a springboard by the students in terms of their future career development, and English teachers are professionally, as well as morally, obligated to find solutions for the students' learning problems and difficulties. Freshman English Curriculum should also provide the freshmen with a new vision regarding the significance of the language and culture. Globalization and the realization of the global society have made English the language of the modern world. In order to advance and complete successfully, skills in the English language becomes one's most important tool in today's society. The traditional way of exam-orientation must be upgraded and superseded with new concerns of practicality and pragmatism. The new vision implies that English is an imperative subject in cross-curriculum learning. Language and culture cannot be separated; therefore, students' second language learning can be upgraded by exploring the second culture. At the micro level, this paper will analyze the students' difficulties in learning the English language, and develop effective remedies. At the macro level, it will formulate missions of the Freshman English Curriculum, explore means of implementation, and establish new vision for English learners: not to pass any examinations but to make good preparations for a world in which English occupies a firm position as a global language.
