With the increasing contact with the West and the progress within society, western feminism and promotion of women's roles are no strangers to contemporary Taiwanese society. Literature on this issue can be seen in many sports disciplines, such as sports media, sports medicine, sports policy, and sports institutions. However, despite the presence of female athletes in almost all kinds of sports, the confirmation from the public and the angle of media coverage are still not very far from the traditional portrayal of women based on gender stereotypes, Media critics point out that there is a trend of marginalization of women's sports in terms of the quantity and quality of media coverage. They argue that this trend has presented a risk in the long-term promotion of women's sports, and also in the production and reproduction of gender ideology within sport. Therefore, how the media can improve in this aspect and play a suitable role in promoting women's sports is still a widely discussed topic within the academic community. Taking examples from both foreign and local contexts, this article will examine the quantity, the form, the angle and the meaning of the coverage of women's sports and female athletes in the in mass media. This article hopes to raise awareness among readers, and enable readers to look at the representation of women's sports and female athletes with a critical mind.
